The Girl With All the Gifts

I've always wanted to try picking a movie simply based off of its title and I was finally able to make time to do so last weekend. As I began scrolling through Amazon's movie list, I gave myself some rules: No reading the reviews, no watching any trailers, no bathroom breaks, and I absolutely had to finish watching the entire thing even if I found it scary or cringey. The movie that ended up catching my attention was called "The Girl With All The Gifts." The thriller takes place in the future in a post - apocalyptic society where a fungus turns people into "hungries" (otherwise known as zombies). These hungries mainly rely on their sense of smell to find non - infected beings to attack. In response, those trying to avoid the fungus use scent - blocking gel to try and protect themselves.

The movie follows a young, smart girl named Melanie who at first appears to be immune to the fungus. Hungries break into the protection base where she was imprisoned, but she manages to escape with her teacher, a doctor, a sergeant, and a few soldiers. I don't normally watch these kinds of movies but I was definitely surprised with how interesting it was. I honestly thought the movie was going to be predictable and just full of gore but it held my interest and kept me on edge.

  1. I will have to look this up ... unless it has tons of zombie gore. I am such a wimp! I KNOW it's makeup, but I get so legit creeped out by movie gore! I think I see a girl power theme -- so that, I love!

    1. Yesterday I watched a short interview that was done with the young actress who plays Melanie. It sounded like this movie was based off of a book where Melanie is described as having very fair skin and long hair, so it was great to see that appearance wasn't a huge deciding factor during casting.

  2. Sounds like an interesting movie. I used to watch The Walking Dead and stopped halfway through Season 5 because the episodes were too long and I didn't have that kind of time. What would you rate the movie out of 10, and would you recommend it?
