Dear Immature Me,
I’m calling you Immie for short. Relax, it won’t stick.
I’m going to do something you never do for yourself and that’s appreciate. Do us a favor and pat yourself on the back once in a while. You have a lot on your plate and never give yourself credit. To be honest, it’s kind of annoying. You’re a good kid and other people see that too. Think about how much you’re going to change since high school. You dreaded writing to the point where you would openly say that you hated it. Now, you’ll definitely warm up to it with the help of your first college writing class. You’re about to learn that writing isn’t as suffocating as you think it is.
The first thing you’re going to learn about is the importance of revising and asking other people for help. We’ve been over this before, but you’re NOT good at relying on others. You work hard but tire yourself out. Immie, you’re going to work on something called a micro theme which will force you to do a few things outside of your comfort zone: write exactly one page, write without any bias, and peer review. I know you don’t like to share your work with people (especially before you think you’ve spent enough time on it), but you’re going to get used to it. You really need to stop believing that you can spew out good work all in one go.
Trust me, the micro theme is going to be your ultimate favorite project. You really will spend a lot of time on it. What’s going to make you beam is when your teacher praises you in front of the entire class and asks if she can use your work as a model for others. You’ll finally see it’s worth it.
For now, you think you write without bias but we all do. You don’t recognize the common words or phrases that really add emotion and opinion to a piece. Through your documentary summary and article analysis, you’re going to learn to simply state facts. These papers are a lot longer, but you’re going to learn to work more responsibly with rhetorical devices. You’ve heard of ethos, pathos, and logos before so don’t sweat. I can practically see you start to panic. Breathe.
So, Immie, get ready to crank out pages and pages because you’re going to start dealing with numerous drafts. You’ll polish your work until it shines and you’re going to be so, so, so proud. It will be something that glitters. You got this, girl. I’m looking forward to seeing your writing grow and flourish. Use it as a tool to communicate creatively.
Sincerely, with your best interest in mind,
Future you (No, you can’t give me a nickname. Sit down.)
